Playground project with resident participation
North of Freiburg's old town, on the site of the former freight yard where trains used to shunt and goods were handled, a new lively urban quarter has emerged in recent years – a mix of residential and office space with leisure facilities, local amenities and restaurants. As part of the overall development of the new district, a green space with play and exercise areas was planned back in 2020. The residents of the residential quarter were involved in the planning of the playground and were invited to contribute their ideas and wishes for its design. It was important to those responsible for the planning and all those involved in the participation process to create a place where everyone feels welcome. Space for children to play, as well as a green area for all residents – young people, adults and senior citizens, people with and without disabilities – to relax and meet.
A honey-coloured eye-catcher between residential buildings
This joint planning resulted in a playground with a very special theme that fits symbolically into the green heart of the neighbourhood: the ‘beehive’. Bright honey yellow with honeycomb-patterned railings and a striking height of eight metres at its highest tower, the playground equipment from the brand unique adds a sunny, friendly touch to the surrounding residential buildings. With its clean lines and mix of materials, including steel posts, yellow HPL balustrades and play elements, and a giant stainless steel tube slide, the design of the play equipment fits perfectly with the modern, urban aesthetic of the neighbourhood.
Packed with play value
As simple as it appears in its straight lines, the beehive has a playful interior and exterior with all kinds of surprises on the many play levels. The eibe playground designers have packed everything our unique modular system has to offer into the beehive. The children in the neighbourhood grow with the challenges of the varied structures and transitions, the balancing elements and climbing walls of varying degrees of difficulty, and as their physical and cognitive abilities increase, they constantly find new incentives for play and movement.
A place to relax for everyone
In addition to the big challenges on the beehive-look play equipment, the spacious playground area has areas for relaxing and dreaming, e.g. for two on the bee spring rocker, a double swing or the hammock. For little builders and diggers, there is a sandpit from the paradiso brand with all kinds of accessories such as a suspended conveyor and sand sieve. Little explorers will love the water station with a pump, water basin and channels for experimenting with the wet element. The bee playground in the neighbourhood on Elisabeth-Geissler-Ruckmich-Straße is a place for exercise and socialising for all residents, enhancing the quality of life right on their doorstep.
